A's to Transition to Natural Grass at Sutter Health Park in 2025
In a significant move for the franchise, the Oakland Athletics (A's) will be transitioning to a natural grass playing surface at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento starting next season, departing from the previously utilized synthetic turf. This decision comes as the team prepares to share the ballpark with the Sacramento River Cats, the Triple-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, until their new stadium in Las Vegas is completed.
An MLB spokesperson emphasized the importance of player feedback in this decision, stating, "Based on feedback from players, as well as guidance from MLB’s long-time field expert, MLB, the A’s and Sutter Health Park have decided to maintain a natural grass field. Our shared, primary concern is ensuring the best and safest playing surface for the A’s, River Cats, and visiting players."
The preference for natural grass was clear among players, and after discussions with the MLB Players Association (MLBPA) regarding the potential risks and benefits of each surface type, all parties agreed to proceed with natural grass for the 2025 Opening Day.
One of the primary concerns regarding synthetic turf at Sutter Health Park was the extreme summer temperatures in Sacramento, which often exceed 100 degrees. Synthetic surfaces tend to retain heat, creating uncomfortable playing conditions during peak summer days.
In addition to the switch to natural grass, MLB has announced several renovations at Sutter Health Park to accommodate the A's arrival. These upgrades include new clubhouse facilities, which will feature an updated locker room, weight room, and training room. A new batter’s eye will also be installed to enhance television broadcast angles and mitigate glare issues for players. Furthermore, the dugouts will undergo renovations to provide more space for players and equipment, along with improved seating arrangements. The bullpens will also see enhancements to better serve the needs of the teams.
