DOTD Urges Candidates to Follow Campaign Sign Guidelines for Public Safety

DOTD Urges Candidates to Follow Campaign Sign Guidelines for Public Safety

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) has issued a reminder to candidates running for public office regarding the importance of adhering to state regulations when it comes to the placement of campaign signs. According to Louisiana Law (RS 48:347), it is illegal to position signs within the right-of-way of state highways. Any campaign signs found in these areas will be removed by DOTD personnel and stored at the nearest parish maintenance unit for a period of 30 days.

Candidates are advised to ensure that their campaign signs are placed responsibly and legally to avoid removal. A practical guideline is to position signs behind existing utility poles, ensuring that permission has been obtained from the property owner. Most utility lines are located within the DOTD right-of-way, making this a crucial consideration for candidates.

For those whose signs have been removed, DOTD has provided a clear process for reclaiming them. Candidates can refer to the contact information listed below for assistance in retrieving their signs.

The DOTD appreciates the cooperation of all candidates in maintaining the safety and accessibility of Louisiana's roadways. By following these guidelines, candidates can contribute to a safer environment for all citizens.
