Ghana Link Network Services Launches State-of-the-Art Weighbridge System at Major Ports
Ghana Link Network Services Ltd. has successfully completed the installation of four advanced weighbridges at Tema Port GPHA Terminal 1 and an additional two at the Atlantic Terminal Services in Takoradi.
These weighbridges are equipped to provide comprehensive measurements including gross, tare, and net weights of cargo, with some featuring multi-deck capabilities. The multi-deck weighbridges not only measure standard weights but also provide axle weights for trucks, which is particularly valuable for the Highway Authority in monitoring vehicle loads.
The integration of these weighbridges into the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS) represents a significant advancement in Ghana's ongoing efforts to modernize its port operations and improve revenue collection processes.
This initiative is set to benefit various stakeholders, including the Customs Division and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), by offering precise net and axle weights that aid the Ghana Highway Authority in safeguarding the nation’s road infrastructure.
Operational at both the Atlantic Terminal in Takoradi and the largest port in the country, Tema Port, the new weighbridge system is designed to deliver accurate measurements of cargo weights for both imports and exports. This level of precision is essential for the correct calculation of duties and taxes on all shipments.
Norvan Acquah-Hayford, Public Relations Manager at Ghana Link Network Services, emphasized, "Our objective with this new module is to enhance transparency and efficiency in Ghana’s import processes. By providing accurate weight measurements, we are not only improving revenue collection but also fostering fair trade practices."
The introduction of the weighbridge system comes at a pivotal moment for Ghana, as the nation’s ports managed over 25 million metric tonnes of cargo in 2022. This highlights the significant impact that even minor enhancements in measurement accuracy can have on operations.
Moreover, the new system addresses a critical issue of road degradation caused by overloaded trucks. By supplying accurate weight data to the Ghana Highway Authority, the system will assist in enforcing load limits, potentially saving millions in road maintenance costs.
The weighbridge module is seamlessly integrated with the existing ICUMS, which was implemented by Ghana Link in 2020 to replace outdated port systems. ICUMS has been recognized for its role in streamlining customs procedures and enhancing revenue collection, despite facing initial challenges during its rollout.
Industry experts view the introduction of the weighbridge module as a logical progression in Ghana’s digital transformation journey. This system also aligns with the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), aimed at promoting intra-African trade. By ensuring accurate and transparent weight measurements, Ghana is setting a benchmark that could inspire similar initiatives across the continent.
As a vital transit hub for landlocked nations such as Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali, Ghana’s ports are essential for regional trade. Accurate weighing of transit goods will facilitate smoother cross-border transportation and help mitigate disputes regarding cargo weights at inland borders.
