Maine Department of Transportation Awarded $1 Million Grant from EPA for Clean Ports Initiative
MAINE (WABI) - The Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) has been awarded a significant grant of one million dollars through the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Clean Ports Program. This funding is part of the Climate and Air Quality Planning initiative aimed at enhancing the sustainability of port operations across the state.
The grant will enable MaineDOT to investigate the feasibility of implementing shore power for cruise and cargo vessels, as well as electrifying port equipment. This initiative is expected to significantly reduce emissions and improve air quality in the surrounding areas.
As part of this project, the MaineDOT will focus on developing comprehensive emissions inventories at key ports, including Portland, Eastport, Searsport, and Rockland. By assessing current emissions levels, the department aims to create a roadmap for reducing the environmental impact of port activities.
The MaineDOT emphasizes the importance of the state's ports to the national economy, as they play a crucial role in the transportation of goods and people across the United States. This grant will not only support local environmental goals but also enhance the operational efficiency of Maine's ports, ensuring their continued contribution to economic growth.
